Minnesota Wild Defenseman Zeev Buium Plays Hockey

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Wild announced today that they have signed defenseman Zeev Buium to a three-year, entry-level contract. The contract takes effect immediately, allowing Buium to compete in the team’s final regular-season games, beginning with a match against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.

Buium, 19, has made headlines this season with the University of Denver, helping the Pioneers reach the Frozen Four. In 41 games during his sophomore season, he collected 48 points (13 goals, 35 assists), leading all NCAA defensemen in scoring and ranking second overall in assists among college players. His performances this season earned him numerous accolades including NCHC Player of the Year and a finalist spot for the Hobey Baker Award.

“Zeev is a special talent,” said Wild General Manager Bill Guerin. “His skating ability and vision on the ice will allow him to transition quickly to the NHL. He has shown he can excel at every level he has played.”

The Laguna Niguel, California native’s accomplishments extend beyond his college career. Buium was instrumental in Team USA‘s gold medal victories at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships, serving as an alternate captain. He recorded crucial assists during the championship final, further highlighting his leadership and skills on an international stage.

In his freshman season, Buium already made an impact, registering 50 points (11 goals, 39 assists) and winning the NCAA National Championship. He became the first freshman defenseman at Denver to achieve such a scoring milestone in more than two decades.

During his college career, Buium received multiple honors, including First Team All-American and NCHC Defensive Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons. He notably ranked among the top defensemen for blocked shots and overall points in both his freshman and sophomore years.

As Buium joins the Wild, expectations will be high. With a healthy mix of youth and veteran presence on Minnesota’s defense, which includes captain Jared Spurgeon and rising star Brock Faber, Buium is anticipated to make significant contributions as the team gears up for the playoffs.

“He understands the game, he’s quick, and he’s unafraid to step up under pressure,” Guerin added. “We are excited to see how he’ll perform against NHL competition.”

Buium was selected 12th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, becoming the highest pick in Denver hockey program history. As he transitions to professional play, he is set to wear jersey number 8 for the Wild.
