Minor Earthquake Hits New Madrid County Near Marston, Missouri

NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS) – A minor earthquake shook New Madrid County just after midnight on Wednesday, April 30. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 2.3 quake that struck at 12:31 a.m., approximately 1.2 miles northeast of Marston.
The quake had a depth of 4.34 miles. As of 7:40 a.m., no individuals had reported actually feeling the earthquake.
Seismologist observations noted that while the quake was relatively small, its occurrence in the overnight hours was unusual. The tremor occurred directly under a small airport located just north of Marston, which may have contributed to some residents feeling the slight jolt.
Emergency management officials are urging local residents to review their earthquake safety plans and secure heavy furniture in their homes. Although the 2.3 magnitude quake would typically not cause any damage, it serves as a reminder of the area’s seismic activity.
Residents living nearby, including those in Portageville and Tiptonville, are advised to keep an eye on seismic updates, as aftershocks or additional minor tremors could occur in the upcoming days. The New Madrid Fault Zone remains a historically significant seismic area, known for some of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history.
