Mirin Fader Explores LaMelo Ball’s Journey Beyond Basketball
Los Angeles, California — Writer Mirin Fader has been captivated by LaMelo Ball’s journey in basketball since she first saw him play in Lithuania in 2018. At the time, Ball was a high school dropout competing professionally overseas, a decision that raised eyebrows and questions about his future.
Fader recalled watching Ball shoot baskets before practice in a small gym in Prienai, Lithuania. The young player was finding his rhythm, shooting from different spots on the court and gradually moving farther from the hoop. Fader noted the unique challenges Ball faced in a foreign environment, away from home and dealing with the pressure of being compared to his older brother, Lonzo Ball, a rookie with the Los Angeles Lakers.
“He needs this ritual,” Fader thought, as she sat in the stands, recognizing the struggle to adapt to a different culture. She was not only interested in Ball’s athletic abilities but also in the human stories behind the headlines.
As Ball has become a rising star with the Charlotte Hornets, Fader has followed his career closely. Her experiences traveling from Lithuania to Wollongong, Australia, where Ball played before being drafted third overall in 2020, enriched her writing.
Fader, previously a senior writer at The Ringer, has also authored books on other basketball legends, such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Hakeem Olajuwon. Her upcoming book will highlight Larry Bird. She emphasizes human aspects in her stories, exploring what motivates players and how they confront personal challenges.
Today, players share more of their lives than ever, allowing fans to connect on a deeper level. Fader’s work aims to bridge that gap, capturing the complexity of athletes’ journeys on and off the court.
“It’s a fascinating time for storytelling in the NBA,” Fader said, looking forward to continuing her work at The Athletic.
