Miss Dior Essence: A Bold Fragrance Inspired by History

PARIS, France – Christian Dior’s iconic fragrance, originally launched in 1947, has been reimagined as Miss Dior Essence, a new scent that honors its history while embodying freshness and vibrancy. The updated perfume is inspired by Catherine Dior, Christian’s sister, who exemplified resilience during World War II.

When Christian Dior introduced the original Miss Dior, he envisioned a perfume that would serve as an ‘invisible gown’ that transcended time. The name ‘Miss Dior’ came from a casual remark about Catherine, who survived the atrocities of the war and later became a florist in Paris. Her story of strength and perseverance is interwoven with the fragrance’s legacy.

“Fruity, luscious, juicy… and sensual,” described Francis Kurkdjian, Dior’s Perfume Creation Director, while explaining the essence of Miss Dior. The new scent opens with blackberry and elderflower, transitioning into a heart of jasmine. This updated formula maintains the spirit of the original while introducing a fresh exuberance that is both lush and radiant.

In terms of packaging, Miss Dior Essence is displayed in a sophisticated bottle reminiscent of tailored fashion, featuring frosted glass etched with a houndstooth motif and a textured black grosgrain bow. According to the design team, every detail reflects the couture heritage of the brand.

Natalie Portman, the brand ambassador for Miss Dior for over 15 years, shared her connection to the fragrance. “The Miss Dior character has grown as I have grown,” she said, noting how the scent evokes memories of youth, romance, and blooming flowers. Portman highlighted Catherine Dior’s influence in her understanding of the brand, calling her a “courageous, strong, bold, free, liberated woman.”

Reflecting on Catherine’s involvement in the French Resistance, Portman added, “Her story gives a lot of meaning to the whole enterprise of what Christian Dior was doing.” She emphasized the significance of beauty in the aftermath of hardship, celebrating the ability to create joy through fragrance.
