Missing California Donkey Found Living with Wild Elk After 5 Years
A donkey that went missing from his California home five years ago has been discovered alive and well, living amongst a herd of wild elk in a surprising turn of events.
The donkey, named Diesel, vanished in April 2019 during a hike with his owners, Terrie and Dave Drewry, when he got frightened and ran off. Despite extensive searches, the Drewrys had given up hope of finding him.
However, earlier this year, a hunter named Max Fennell spotted Diesel among a group of at least a dozen elk in the remote wilderness of northern California. Fennell captured a video of the peculiar sight, which later went viral on social media.
After seeing the video on Instagram, Terrie and Dave Drewry were able to confirm that the donkey in the footage was indeed their long-lost Diesel, bringing them immense relief and joy.
According to Terrie Drewry, Diesel’s reappearance and apparent integration into the elk herd was a heartwarming sight. She expressed that they are happy to know he is safe, healthy, and seemingly content living in the wild.
The Drewrys shared that Diesel had bolted into the wilderness after being startled on a trail during a camping trip. Despite previous sightings caught on a trail camera and hoof prints indicating his survival, the family had been unable to locate him.
While they miss Diesel dearly, the Drewrys have decided not to attempt to bring him back home, as he appears to be thriving and enjoying his newfound life among the elk. They believe he is fulfilling his natural instincts and living harmoniously with his new companions.
