Missing Swimmer Ramon Diaz-Soria Found Dead in Lake Lanier

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed Sunday evening that the body of 27-year-old Ramon Diaz-Soria was recovered from Lake Lanier.
DNR officials reported that Diaz-Soria was last seen jumping off a rental boat near Vanns Tavern Park around 8 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses stated he was wearing a life jacket, but it was not secured properly.
After jumping into the water, Diaz-Soria did not resurface. Search efforts were quickly launched but had to pause after dark on Saturday. DNR resumed the search Sunday morning using SONAR equipment to locate him.
Emergency crews from Forsyth and Hall counties assisted in the search operations. His body was located in approximately 60 feet of water after a search lasting more than 24 hours.
Family members shared their grief over the loss. Abigail Diaz, Ramon’s sister, stated that he could not swim, despite wearing the vest. “He’s such a good person. It’s like stuff like this you wouldn’t imagine happening to people like that,” she said.
Diaz-Soria had been out on the boat with friends who attempted to rescue him once they realized he was missing, according to his sister. They described how quickly the situation unfolded, leaving them unable to save him.
The DNR has since released his body to the county coroner for further proceedings. Family members gathered at the lake to support the search, mourning the loss of a man described as the light of their family.
“He had dreams of returning to school and finishing his degree,” Abigail Diaz added. “I don’t know how I am supposed to be strong without him.”
