National Day Of Prayer Event In Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippians are invited to gather for the 74th annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 1, at the Mississippi Coliseum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event encourages all Americans, regardless of faith or background, to come together in prayer for the nation’s well-being.

The National Day of Prayer has a rich history, dating back to a call for prayer issued by the Continental Congress in 1775. Congress officially designated the first Thursday in May as a day for national prayer in 1952, following a resolution signed by President Harry Truman. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended the law to permanently set this day.

This year’s gathering will include a national broadcast at 7 p.m. available online and through various Christian television and radio networks. Participants will have the opportunity to join in a collective voice asking for guidance and blessings for leaders and the nation.

Kathy Branzell, president of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, has shared a prayer for attendees. It expresses gratitude for the blessings in America and a desire for healing and unity among communities and individuals.

“These screenings take about 10 minutes and can save lives,” said Dr. Gina Jefferson. The importance of coming together to pray and reflect on the values that underpin the country is a theme that resonates deeply during this observance.

As Mississippi prepares for this event, local leaders urge everyone to participate actively, showing solidarity and faith in a time of division for many. The National Day of Prayer is seen as an essential aspect of American heritage, exemplifying unity through collective prayer across diverse communities.
