Mixing it Up: Celebrating National Margarita Day with Deals and History of the Classic Cocktail
As festivities gear up for National Margarita Day on February 22, celebrations are underway with discounts and a look back at the iconic cocktail’s rich history.
While the exact origins of the margarita remain shrouded in uncertainty, early versions of cocktails similar to it appeared in cocktail books as far back as 1939. By the 1940s, the drink had gained popularity in various states including California and Texas.
Core ingredients are agreed upon, consisting of tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur like triple sec. However, mixologists have found creative ways to elevate the classic recipe, with mixologist Damiana introducing the unique Velvet Kickstand margarita made with Damiana liqueur.
In his book, Damiana also features the Margarita Verde, a refreshing blend of sweet & sour mix, Grand Marnier, cilantro, and cucumber, showcasing the versatility of this beloved cocktail.
The margarita has experienced a resurgence in recent years, claiming the title of the top-selling cocktail in 2023 and garnering popularity in the United States, as revealed by NielsenIQ data cited by spirits company Diageo.
Responding to the growing demand for margaritas, Diageo has introduced the newest addition to its ready-to-drink cocktail line-up, the Margarita in a Bottle, available in two sizes: 350ml serving four cocktails and 750ml serving eight, alongside its acclaimed Tanqueray and Don Julio tequilas.
On National Margarita Day, a plethora of discounts and promotions await margarita enthusiasts at various establishments, making it the perfect time to indulge in this timeless favorite. Keep an eye out for local deals and enjoy the celebration of this beloved cocktail tradition.
