MLB’s Top Free Agents Enter Market After World Series
LOS ANGELES, CA — Major League Baseball’s free agent season is upon us, starting the day after the World Series concludes. Players eligible for free agency cannot sign with new teams until five days after the final out.
This year’s class is headlined by outfielder Kyle Tucker, who is expected to attract a record contract in the $400 million to $500 million range. Tucker’s strong performance, despite injuries, included a .266 batting average and 22 home runs in 136 games for the Chicago Cubs.
Along with Tucker, notable free agents include designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who hit 56 home runs this season, and first baseman Pete Alonso, now the all-time home run leader for the New York Mets with 264 homers. Left-handed pitchers Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez are also on the market, along with several impactful closers like Edwin Díaz and Robert Suarez.
Schwarber’s ability to mentor younger players and his consistent power hitting have made him a coveted player. He might receive offers from various teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets, with predictions suggesting a five-year deal worth around $160 million.
“The Phillies will make every effort to re-sign him,” said analyst Jim Bowden. “It will be fascinating to see what offers Schwarber gets on the open market.”
As for Alonso, he has put together a solid season with 38 home runs and is expected to reject a $24 million player option, potentially opening the door for a multi-year contract elsewhere. His price tag is estimated at around $182 million for six years.
Valdez, who has excelled in postseason performances, is projected to attract a six-year deal worth around $190 million, making him the top starting pitcher available this offseason.
The market also features international talent, with potential free agents like Bo Bichette and hitters from Japan expected to command significant interest.
As the offseason approaches, many players and teams are bracing for changes that could reshape the league for the upcoming season.
