MMA Champion Ben Askren Evaluated for Lung Transplant

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Former MMA champion Ben Askren is being evaluated for a possible lung transplant, according to a Facebook post by his wife, Amy Askren. The 40-year-old athlete remains hospitalized due to severe pneumonia caused by a staph infection.
Askren has been in critical condition and is currently sedated on a ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). His wife shared updates on his health, stating that he has been able to open his eyes and squeeze hands, indicating some awareness despite his serious condition.
“I haven’t shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while and I was hoping to have him wake up and be the one to decide what to share,” Amy wrote. “I’m still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant.”
Askren, who retired from mixed martial arts in 2019, is known for his wrestling achievements, including being a two-time NCAA Division I champion and a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. He has three children with his wife, Amy, who expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the community.
“Thank you for every message and all of the support,” Amy stated. “Despite this awful situation, I’m feeling so blessed by the community we’re surrounded by. Ben is the healthiest guy I know and I never could have expected this.”
Athletes and fans from the wrestling and MMA communities have shared messages of support as Askren continues his fight for recovery in the hospital. The UFC also expressed solidarity, sending support to Askren and his family during this challenging time.
