LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Disney‘s “Moana 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated hit, premiered in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024, and is now available for rent or purchase on digital platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video. However, fans eager to stream the film on Disney+ will need to wait until early 2025.

The sequel reunites Moana and demigod Maui on a new oceanic adventure, featuring a crew of unexpected seafarers. The film has already grossed approximately $1.02 billion at the global box office, making it one of Disney’s most successful releases of the year.

Based on Disney’s recent streaming patterns, “Moana 2” is expected to debut on Disney+ around February 2025. This timeline aligns with previous releases like “Wish” and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which typically arrive on the platform three months after their theatrical premieres.

To watch “Moana 2” on Disney+, viewers will need a subscription to the streaming service, which starts at $7.99 per month for its basic, ad-supported plan. While Disney+ does not currently offer a free trial, subscribers can access the film as part of Disney’s extensive library or through bundled plans that include ESPN+ or Hulu.

In “Moana 2,” Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, prompting her to journey into dangerous, long-lost waters of Oceania. The film is set three years after the original and introduces a new crew of characters. The digital release also includes a deleted scene featuring Moana’s crew and a giant two-faced bird.

Meanwhile, Disney is also working on a live-action remake of the original “Moana,” set for release in 2026. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, but no casting has been announced for the title character yet.

Fans can also immerse themselves in the world of Moana at Walt Disney World‘s theme parks. The “Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana” attraction, which opened in 2023, offers an interactive experience inspired by the film’s themes and characters.
