Las Cruces New Mexico Young Park Shooting

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots fired at Young Park late Friday evening, leading to an active investigation and local emergency services on scene, according to KFOX. The exact number of victims remains unconfirmed amid conflicting reports of injuries and fatalities.

Eyewitness accounts and social media reports indicate at least five individuals may have been shot, but authorities have not confirmed any exact figures. Videos circulating from the location show a heavy police presence as officers cordoned off the area. A tweet from breaking news handle @rawsalerts stated, “Local news outlets report that at least five people, possibly more, have been shot, though the exact number of injuries and fatalities remains unclear. As this is a rapidly developing and active situation, police are urging the public to avoid the area.”

Salina Madrid, a reporter from KFOX who is at the scene, confirmed that at least one individual has died due to the shooting. Additional details regarding the identities of victims, as well as potential suspects, are still under investigation. The Young Park area, located at 850 S Walnut St, is popular among residents for community activities.

This incident follows another shooting in Las Cruces earlier this month on March 13, where Police Chief Jeremy Story spoke about an armed man who was shot and injured during an encounter with officers. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Gabriel Padilla, was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. Chief Story confirmed, “When he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.” Padilla faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer and negligent use of a deadly weapon.

The Las Cruces Police Department has yet to release an official statement regarding the Young Park shooting. Authorities are encouraging any witnesses to come forward as they continue to gather information about this evolving situation.
