Music Executive Dave Shapiro Dies in Plane Crash

NEW YORK (AP) — The alternative music community mourns the loss of music executive Dave Shapiro, who died in a plane crash early Thursday, May 22, 2025, in a San Diego neighborhood. The crash occurred during foggy weather when the plane struck a power line, leading to multiple fatalities among those onboard.
Among the deceased were Daniel Williams, a former drummer of the Ohio metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, and Shapiro himself, who was a co-founder of Sound Talent Group. Other victims included Kendall Fortner, 24, Emma Huke, 25, both employees at Shapiro’s agency; Celina Marie Rose Kenyon, 36, a professional photographer; and 41-year-old Dominic Christopher Damian.
Shapiro, 42, was a notable figure in the music industry, advocating for independent musicians and supporting a range of genres from pop-punk to metalcore. Sound Talent Group, which he founded in 2018, boasted a diverse roster that included bands like Pierce the Veil and Sum 41, as well as pop artists like Hanson.
“We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues, and friends,” the agency stated in a press release.
Tributes poured in from across the music community, with Pierce the Veil acknowledging Shapiro’s deep influence and dedication to the scene. “It’s hard to put into words how much he meant to so many of us,” the band said via social media.
Thomas Gutches, a manager in the industry, highlighted Shapiro’s impact on the next generation of artists, stating he had a talent for developing bands and taking their careers to the next level.
As a passionate aviator, Shapiro often spoke about the joy of flying and how it helped him focus. He owned a flight school and frequently shared his love for aviation, even posting about obtaining his airline transport pilot rating.
Local authorities reported the plane crashed in a residential area, igniting fires that prompted evacuations. Fire crews worked to contain the situation as debris scattered across several blocks.
Shapiro’s passing is a significant loss in the world of alternative music, with many remembering his genuine character and support for artists at all stages of their careers.
