Nathaniel Rateliff Lights Up Madison Stage During ‘South of Here’ Tour
Madison, WI — Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats captivated an audience of 8,000 fans at Breese Stevens Field on September 18, delivering a dynamic 75-minute, 21-song performance as part of their “South of Here” tour.
The Denver-based Americana musician took a moment to reflect on his long-standing connection to Madison, noting his various performances in the city since his first show at the now-closed Frequency in 2013. “For all the rooms we’ve played in Madison, we love you,” Rateliff told the enthusiastic crowd.
This concert marked Rateliff’s first appearance at Breese Stevens Field, which is closing out its summer concert series. The night also celebrated the beautiful 75-degree weather, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the end of summer.
Amber Eddinger, a concert attendee, shared her thoughts on the evening, saying, “It’s the culmination of the end of summer in Madison.”
The show began with a mellow opening set by New York-based indie artist Hannah Cohen, followed by the Minnesota string band Trampled By Turtles. Their impressive musicianship helped set the stage for Rateliff and the Night Sweats.
As the band launched into their performance with “David and Goliath,” Rateliff’s soulful voice resonated through the venue. The crowd erupted with cheers when the familiar notes of “I Need Never Get Old” filled the air.
Fans eagerly anticipated their favorite songs, including “Hey Mama” and “And It’s Still Alright.” Eddinger recalled seeing Rateliff at The Sylvee earlier this year and anticipated this performance. “It’s a core memory,” she said.
Midway through the set, Rateliff honored their late crew member, Matt, by performing a touching rendition of “And It’s Still Alright,” creating a reflective moment for the audience.
The concert concluded with a spirited cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” and the energetic singalong “S.O.B.” Rateliff expressed gratitude to the Madison crowd, reinforcing the band’s special bond with the city. “Thanks for being here with us,” he said, prompting roaring applause.
