National Sons Day: Observance and Significance

National Sons Day Celebration

National Sons Day will be observed on Saturday, September 28, this year. The day serves as a moment for families to acknowledge and celebrate the vital role sons play in their lives. It offers an opportunity for parents, guardians, and society to cherish and appreciate the young men in their lives.

In contrast to some other family-oriented holidays, National Sons Day is relatively understated but remains significant. The day is meant to focus on expressing gratitude and sharing heartfelt wishes to sons or important figures in one’s life. This can be done through various gestures, including sharing quotes that resonate with the familial bond.

The collection of quotes often includes those by well-known authors and artists. For instance, E.E. Cummings and Robert Munsch provide poignant messages that capture the essence of love and pride parents feel for their sons. Robert Munsch’s line from ‘Love You Forever,’ “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be,” is often referenced during this observance.

Another example is John Green’s quote, “I’m so proud of you that it makes me proud of me. I hope you know that,” which is popular among those seeking to express parental pride. Similarly, Phil Collins‘ song ‘You’ll Be in My Heart’ from the ‘Tarzan’ soundtrack often finds its way into messages shared on this day.

Interestingly, National Sons Day is celebrated twice annually, first on March 4 and then again in September. The dual observance leads some to question why this is the case. Jill Nico is credited with designating the March observance in 2018, aiming to foster deeper connections and dialogues between parents and their sons.

The dual celebration dates have sparked discussions, particularly as social media influencers have played a role in popularizing both March and September dates, leading to a more widespread acknowledgment of the day.

Unlike National Daughters Day, which is fixed on September 25, National Sons Day gives individuals two chances in the year to honor their sons. Families are encouraged to partake in these observances to reflect on and celebrate the relationships they cherish.
