Natrona County Schools Cancel After-School Activities Amid Severe Winter Storm

CASPER, Wyo. — The Natrona County School District announced a cancellation of all after-school clubs, athletics, and activities on Thursday afternoon due to a severe winter storm. The decision was shared through social media channels as winter weather warnings were issued for the region.
Students will be sent home with computers for remote learning in case classes are canceled on Friday, the district confirmed. The National Weather Service in Riverton has placed Natrona County under a winter storm warning, predicting several inches of snow and gusty winds into early Friday.
Tanya Southerland, the district’s director of public relations, emphasized the importance of winter safety on such days. “We do live in Wyoming, and our weather is a little temperamental, so it’s essential to ensure students have appropriate winter weather gear, including hats, gloves, and coats,” Southerland said.
Amid normal school operations, Southerland reminded parents that children waiting for buses or walking to school must be cautious. “Always make sure that the bus driver can see you, you can see the bus, and stay clear in the designated area for the bus stop,” she added. Southerland also advised families to remain vigilant while on sidewalks. “We want to ensure everyone is aware of the weather and the conditions of the roads during these winter months.”
The decision to declare a snow day hinges on the safety of students and staff. “If there is ever a change in school operations due to the weather, parents and guardians will be notified promptly,” Southerland explained, stressing that notifications would be sent out around 5:30 a.m. via text and phone calls to ensure everyone is informed in a timely manner.
According to data from the district, since 2021, there have been only a handful of snow days or temporary virtual learning days implemented, highlighting how rare such occasions are.
