The US Navy Band Woodwind Quintet from the Southeast Division delighted visitors at the Vizcaya Village Farmers Market in Miami, Florida, on Sunday. Their repertoire included pieces by Latin authors, creating a special Mother’s Day gift for attendees.

One attendee, Mónica, expressed her joy at the performance saying, ‘We came to listen to them and I don’t regret it. It has been a beautiful day with music and the company of my family.’

Nicole Maldonado, a member of the Quintet, shared her excitement about the Miami experience, mentioning the interactions with Hispanic families as a highlight of their weeklong stay.

For many families, this Sunday was a unique chance to honor mothers. One attendee, Luis, highlighted the importance of taking a break from daily responsibilities to celebrate in such a welcoming environment.

While it was a day of leisure for some, a mother-daughter pair managing an Argentine empanada stall shared their story of arriving in the country two years ago and working together to achieve their dreams.

The history of Mother’s Day in the US dates back to the 19th century when activist Anna Jarvis advocated for a dedicated day to honor mothers. In 1914, President Wilson officially recognized it as a national holiday.

The Fleet Week in Miami, held from May 5 to May 12, provided an opportunity for around 800 members of the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to engage with the community, marking the first time the event took place in the city.
