NBA Star Anthony Edwards Faces Custody Battle Over Newborn Daughter

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — NBA player Anthony Edwards is embroiled in a legal dispute with Ayesha Howard, who is seeking sole custody of their newborn daughter, Aubri. Howard filed court documents on March 11, 2025, claiming she is a ‘fit and loving mother’ and requesting both legal and physical custody of the child born earlier this year.
In her initial lawsuit filed in September 2024, Howard alleged that Edwards fathered her unborn child. Following the child’s birth, she reiterated her position and called for Edwards to be recognized as the father on the birth certificate. In response, Edwards, 23, acknowledged his paternity but has contested some of Howard’s financial demands.
In her court filings, Howard stated that Edwards had previously confirmed his paternity through DNA tests conducted in December 2024. She is also requesting reimbursement for expenses related to her pregnancy and postpartum care, in addition to child support for their daughter’s upbringing. Howard has another child, a son from a previous relationship with rapper Lil Baby.
Edwards provided his response on the same day, admitting his role as the biological father but denying Howard’s requests for financial support. He argued that many of her claims ‘do not necessitate a response’ and noted that no formal child support arrangement is currently in place.
Complicating matters, Edwards is also involved in a separate legal dispute regarding his first child, Aris, with ex-partner Daja Carlyle, where he has accused her of harassment. This series of paternity cases has drawn attention, casting a spotlight on Edwards’ personal life amid his rising career in the NBA.
During a hearing in the ongoing case, Howard expressed hope that the parties could reach an amicable solution. Despite Edwards’ denial of her financial demands, both parents are encouraged to focus on the well-being of their child.
Edward’s tumultuous legal situation reflects a broader issue faced by many athletes balancing the demands of their professional careers with personal responsibilities. How Edwards moves forward will likely influence his public image and professional trajectory as he navigates the ongoing challenges of parenthood.
In previous public statements, Edwards has highlighted the importance of family, remarking on fatherhood as a fulfilling experience. However, these recent developments may test his ability to maintain a balance between his responsibilities on the court and at home.
