Nelly Furtado to Take Extended Break from Performing
WASHINGTON — Nelly Furtado announced Friday that she will take a break from performing for the foreseeable future. The 46-year-old singer shared her decision on social media, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of her debut album, “Whoa, Nelly!”
In a heartfelt message to her fans, Furtado reflected on her 25-year career, expressing gratitude for the journey and her supporters. “I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever,” she wrote.
Furtado reminisced about her early years, sharing a throwback photo of herself at 20, preparing for her first performance at Lilith Fair. “It was so meaningful and my artist self felt so actualized,” she said. She also mentioned a video from a recent show in Berlin, where the crowd’s energy thrilled her.
The singer praised the resurgence of her music, noting, “My music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that. To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful.” Furtado emphasized the magic of connecting with her audience.
Her announcement follows the release of her seventh studio album, “7,” in September 2024, which was her first album in seven years. Furtado’s music has sold over 45 million records worldwide, and she has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy award.
In closing, Furtado expressed endless gratitude to her fans and collaborators, wishing budding artists many years of fruitful performance. “I thank all my brilliant collaborators and loyal champions,” she said.
