Netflix The Lost Children Colombian Amazon Plane Crash Rescue

Netflix‘s latest documentary, ‘The Lost Children,’ tells the gripping and heart-wrenching story of four young siblings who survived a plane crash in the Colombian Amazon. The incident, known as the 2023 Caquetá Cessna Stationair Crash, occurred on May 1, 2023, when a small plane carrying seven people, including the four children, crashed in the dense jungle.

The children, Lesly Jacobo Bonbaire, 13; Solecni Ranoque Mucutuy, 9; Tien Noriel Ronoque Mucutuy, 4; and Cristian Neryman Ranoque Mucutuy, 11 months, were the only survivors of the crash, which killed all the adult passengers. The search for them, dubbed Operation Hope, was one of the largest in Colombian history and involved both the country’s Special Forces and local indigenous communities.

The rescue efforts were marked by a unique collaboration between modern technology and traditional methods. While the Colombian military used advanced gear and helicopters, the indigenous volunteers relied on their deep knowledge of the jungle. This combination ultimately led to the successful rescue of the children after 41 days in the wilderness.

The documentary, directed by Orlando von Einsiedel along with co-directors Jorge Duran and Lali Houghton, highlights a pivotal moment when indigenous people performed a ritual involving ayahuasca, a potent psychedelic, which inspired renewed search efforts. The following day, the children were found in a severely malnourished state but alive.

The eldest child, Lesly, played a crucial role in their survival by foraging for food and taking care of her siblings. The children’s fear of their abusive father, Manuel Ranoque, who had a history of mistreating their mother, is also a significant theme in the documentary. It is suggested that this fear may have contributed to the children hiding and avoiding detection.

Following their rescue, the children were taken into care by Colombia‘s Institute of Family Welfare. Their father, Manuel Ranoque, was later arrested in August 2023 and charged with sexually assaulting his stepdaughter, Lesly. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.

‘The Lost Children’ not only chronicles the incredible survival story of the four siblings but also underscores the importance of collaboration and the power of community, even in the face of adversity and historical conflicts.
