Secrets We Keep Netflix Thriller Review

Copenhagen, Denmark — Netflix’s latest Nordic noir hit, “Secrets We Keep,” has surprised many by achieving a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. While some viewers enjoyed the Danish thriller centered on the mystery of missing au pair Ruby, others are questioning whether the series truly deserves such high praise.

Critics point out that the narrative, while gripping, features predominantly unlikeable characters. Protagonist Cecilie, played by Marie Bach Hansen, is tasked with uncovering the truth behind Ruby’s disappearance but often seems morally ambiguous herself. The show’s portrayal of the affluent class, who believe they are above reproach, adds another layer of complexity to its bleak narrative.

Despite divided opinions, the series does surprise with its unexpected twists. Yet, for some, it doesn’t compare favorably to other Nordic noir titles on Netflix this year. For instance, “The Åre Murders” has gained significant attention for its charming characters, particularly cop Hanna, portrayed by Carla Sehn.

Meanwhile, “The Glass Dome,” featuring criminal profiler Lejla Ness, captured viewer interest due to its thriller elements and engaging storyline about a child’s kidnapping. Critics noted that Ness is a more relatable character, thereby making the series more approachable.

Another popular Nordic noir recently added to Netflix is “The Breakthrough,” which is inspired by a real-life murder case solved with genetic genealogy techniques. These distinctive narratives have made some viewers feel “Secrets We Keep” might not have the same depth as these other shows.

As the debate over the series’ critical acclaim continues, some reviewers remain skeptical of its perfect rating, suggesting that it is a good watch but not worthy of being crowned a top-tier thriller. “Secrets We Keep,” along with other intriguing titles like “The Åre Murders” and “The Glass Dome,” is currently streaming on Netflix.
