Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has unveiled new caregiver pilot programs to replace the expiring Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilots. The announcement signals a commitment to supporting caregivers and enhancing the quality of care for Canadian families.

The new programs come as part of the 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan, with over 15,000 caregivers set to be admitted as permanent residents in Canada. This move underscores the crucial role caregivers play in the community.

Small Business Minister Rechie Valdez voiced her support for the new pilot programs, emphasizing the need to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of caregivers throughout generations. The government aims to create policies that better serve the caregiver community.

Across Canada, the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change has been advocating for fairer caregiver program requirements to ensure more inclusivity and accessibility. The organization has held rallies under the banner of Migrant Spring in various cities to press for policy changes.

Earlier this year, Ottawa responded to concerns raised by the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change by reducing the work experience requirement for caregiver program applicants. This adjustment aims to facilitate caregivers’ transition to permanent residency in Canada.

Former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser highlighted the importance of caregivers in Canadian families, noting that by lowering the work experience requirement, more caregivers and their families can start a new chapter in Canada.

Recent data from the IRCC shows that thousands of foreign nationals have successfully obtained permanent residency through the caregiver programs, reflecting the significance of these pathways for individuals seeking to build a future in Canada.
