New Episode Reveals Shocking Details in Egypt Covington’s Murder Case

Belleville, Michigan – A new episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered revisits the 2017 murder of Egypt Covington, a talented singer. The episode, airing on February 19, 2025, explores how her family and law enforcement fought for justice for three years after her death.
Egypt Covington, 27, was found dead in her home on June 25, 2017, by her boyfriend, Curtis Meadows. Meadows became concerned when Covington did not respond to his morning check-in. Upon arriving at her home, he discovered her car parked outside and the front door ajar. Inside, he found her lying face down on the floor, her hands bound with Christmas lights. Covington had been shot in the head.
The Van Buren Township Police’s investigation quickly focused on Meadows, who was interrogated but cleared due to a lack of motive. Initially, law enforcement considered Covington’s ex-boyfriend a person of interest due to a violent past, but without sufficient evidence, no arrests were made, which stalled the case until 2020.
Covington’s family faced significant challenges in getting the investigation transferred to the Michigan State Police. After years of advocacy, the case was finally handled by state detectives in 2020.
To advance the investigation, Michigan State Police utilized a geofence warrant—a controversial tool that collects location data from cellphones within a specific area at a particular time. This data allowed them to track the movements of potential suspects during the time of Covington’s murder.
Investigators revealed that the motive behind Covington’s murder was tied to a failed burglary. Covington’s neighbor, a certified caregiver who openly discussed marijuana on local television, became an unexpected element in the crime. On the day of Covington’s murder, her neighbor had attended the Electric Forest music festival, leaving Covington home alone, watching a movie. Three men mistakenly targeted Covington’s side of the duplex, intending to rob the neighbor.
In a fit of panic after the break-in, the assailants bound Covington and shot her to conceal their crime. In November and December 2020, police apprehended Shane Evans, Timothy Moore, and Shandon Groom based on cell phone data linking them to the crime scene. They had stolen Covington’s mobile phone, which pinged in the vicinity where they discarded it.
As a result of the investigation, Moore was charged in 2023 with first-degree murder, felony murder, first-degree home invasion, and four counts of felony firearms. Groom faced similar charges, while Evans was charged with criminal murder and first-degree home invasion.
The episode titled ‘A Girl Named Egypt’ will provide additional insights into the investigation and includes commentary from state detectives who reveal clues uncovered over the years. This haunting case remains a stark reminder of the challenges faced by families seeking justice in the wake of violent crime.
