New Jersey Launches REAL ID Emergency Program Ahead of Deadline

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — With the May 7 deadline for REAL ID enforcement fast approaching, New Jersey officials have announced a new program to help residents who need a REAL ID for urgent travel. Starting April 24, eligible individuals can secure expedited appointments at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) facilities.
This program targets those who need to board a domestic flight within 14 days due to emergencies, including life-or-death situations. Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd stated, “Our efforts will continue through and beyond May 7 to serve as many customers as possible.”
To participate in the emergency program, applicants must provide proof of their emergency, such as a death certificate, a letter from a hospital, or a statement from a mortuary. They must also demonstrate they do not have other acceptable identification like a valid U.S. passport.
The program is set to be available through a dedicated portal opening on April 24, distinct from the standard NJMVC scheduling system. Emergency appointments can be made for free, but an $80 expedited shipping fee will apply for those who need their REAL ID quickly.
Residents over 18 must possess a REAL ID, passport, or federally approved identification for domestic flights. The REAL ID includes a small star in the upper right-hand corner, indicating federal compliance.
As of now, the NJMVC has increased available appointments, launching initiatives such as “REAL ID Thursdays” to meet the rising demand. The agency has released around 3,000 new appointments daily to accommodate applicants.
The REAL ID Act is a federal requirement that applies to air travel, but it does not affect those who only need identification for driving purposes. Standard licenses remain valid for that use. For more information on the REAL ID emergency program, residents can visit the NJMVC REAL ID website.
