New Jersey Transit Trains Window Installation

Trenton, New Jersey — New Jersey Transit (NJT) unveiled video footage Wednesday showcasing crews as they install new windows on its multilevel train fleet, a project expected to cost around $15 million by September 2024.

The window replacement initiative, which involves replacing approximately 15,000 windows across NJT’s trains, is part of a phased approach aimed at minimizing service disruptions. The work is scheduled to coincide with regular maintenance periods.

NJT stated that the spike in estimated costs is primarily attributed to inflation, increasing labor expenses, and modifications to material specifications. While the costs are significant, NJT officials emphasize the importance of upgrading the windows to improve passenger safety, comfort, and energy efficiency.

<p“We understand that maintenance can be inconvenient for our riders, but it’s essential for ensuring a safe travel experience,” said NJT spokesperson Jane Doe. “Replacing these windows is a critical step in maintaining our fleet and providing reliable service.”

The ongoing project has garnered attention from commuters, many of whom use NJT services daily. Anthony Smith, a regular passenger, expressed support for the upgrades. “I think it’s a good investment. Better windows mean less noise and control over heating in the winter,” he said.

As part of the commitment to transparency, NJT plans to continue updating passengers on the progress of the window replacement project through its website and official social media channels. The agency aims to complete all installations by the end of 2025.
