New Netflix Series Explores Garfield’s Presidency and His Assassin
CHICAGO, IL — Netflix‘s new limited series, “Death by Lightning,” examines the tumultuous presidency of James Garfield and the tragic events surrounding his assassination. Starring Michael Shannon as Garfield, the four-episode show tells of his remarkable rise from humble beginnings to the White House, only to be cut short by an assassin’s bullet.
Garfield, who ascended to the presidency in 1881, faced major challenges in a nation still recovering from the Civil War. “He understood that being a president was an act of servitude, not an act of power or control,” Shannon told Tudum. His presidency was abruptly ended when Charles Guiteau, an obsessive office seeker played by Matthew Macfadyen, shot him.
Series creator Mike Makowsky was inspired by Candice Millard’s biography, “Destiny of the Republic.” Makowsky described the story as “contemporary and vital,” incorporating both tragic and absurdly funny elements. The show not only focuses on the relationship between Garfield and Guiteau but also introduces a cast of historical figures, including politicians and inventors who played key roles during that era.
Betty Gilpin portrays Lucretia Garfield, the First Lady, who is depicted as being surprised by her husband’s presidency. “It felt like reading the most beautiful text thread you’ve ever read,” Gilpin said about her research into the character. Other notable cast members include Nick Offerman as Vice President Chester Arthur and Bradley Whitford as Senator James Blaine.
Whitford expressed excitement about playing a role in a project touching on such significant historical events. “I was not familiar with [Garfield], and did not understand what a profoundly effective leader he could have been in the wake of the Civil War,” he said.
The series offers a glimpse into the lives of Garfield and Guiteau, intertwined in a tragic tale of ambition and delusion. It will begin streaming on Netflix on November 6.
