Steven Universe New Series Announcement Annecy

Annecy, France – The beloved animated series “Steven Universe” is getting a sequel titled “Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars,” currently in development for Prime Video. The announcement was made Wednesday by creator Rebecca Sugar during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Cartoon Network Studios showcased upcoming projects.

During the event, Sugar introduced the new series after a brief statement from studio president Sam Register. “Lars of the Stars” will follow fan-favorite character Lars Barriga, who is described as an “eternal teenager and space outlaw.” According to the official description, the series will see Lars and his pirate crew smuggling contraband, avoiding authorities, and uncovering the secrets of the fallen Gem Empire.

The original “Steven Universe,” which aired from 2013 to 2020, became a cultural phenomenon, winning a Peabody Award for its rich storytelling and diverse characters. Sugar indicated that this new series will explore the “past, present, and future” of the franchise.

The presentation included an unexpected live performance by Sugar, who introduced a new song written for the second season of the spinoff series “Adventure Time.” Clips shared during the event suggested a more prominent role for the character Huntress in this popular series.

In addition to the new series, Cartoon Network also revealed that the irreverent comedy, based on the DC superhero team, will be returning for its tenth season. Executive producers Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan, and Sam Register are set to return for this milestone season.

As the festival celebrated 25 years of Cartoon Network Studios, creators showcased various upcoming projects, including a preschool adaptation of “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” and a new YA animated series based on Jillian Tamaki’s comic. Sugar’s announcement marks an exciting expansion of the “Steven Universe” universe, further promising to captivate fans.
