New World Announces Final Content Updates, Game Faces Uncertain Future
SEATTLE, Wash. — Amazon Games announced on October 28, 2025, that its MMORPG New World: Aeternum will no longer receive new content updates after Season 10, also known as the Nighthaven update. This decision comes four years after the game’s PC launch, during which it developed a loyal player community.
The company cited sustainability concerns as the reason for halting new updates. ‘It is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates,’ Amazon Games stated in an official announcement. After extensive consideration, the team decided to make the Nighthaven update available for free to all New World players, along with a previous expansion, Rise of the Angry Earth.
Despite the cessation of new content, servers are expected to remain operational through 2026, giving players time to explore the existing offerings. The developers plan to keep an eye on player feedback and continue with certain features such as bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. ‘We want to thank the New World community for your support over the years,’ the announcement continued.
Players can still purchase the game and in-game currency as usual, although the future of these features remains ambiguous. While world bosses and bonus weeks will continue, official seasonal events are being discontinued, including any planned holiday events.
The announcement comes after a week of major restructuring within Amazon, which included the layoff of numerous employees across its game development division. Steve Boom, a vice president at Amazon, confirmed that the company would be halting much of its AAA game development, particularly for MMOs.
The decision raises concerns about the broader MMORPG genre’s vitality. Players speculate that without fresh content, the community may dwindle as interest fades. As one dedicated player reflected, ‘Even if New World had flaws, it was moving the genre forward in a meaningful way.’
A small consolation remains for current players: the announcement assured that existing players can still enjoy the game without immediate threats. “We are grateful for every moment you’ve spent helping to build this extraordinary world alongside us,” Amazon stated.
