New York City, NY — The race for mayor heats up as early voting begins today, October 25. Candidates Zohran Mamdani from the Democratic Party, former Governor Andrew Cuomo as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa are vying to succeed Mayor Eric Adams, who unexpectedly ended his campaign last month.

Polls are open for early voting starting today and will continue through November 2. Election Day is scheduled for November 4, with polls operating from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. This election is particularly significant as it determines not only the next mayor but also public advocate, comptroller, borough presidents, City Council seats, and more.

Voter registration deadlines align with the start of early voting today. Eligible voters can verify their registration status online or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE. For those who are not registered, forms can be filed either online or in person before the deadline.

Mamdani has gained traction in recent weeks, pushing a progressive agenda focused on affordability and community safety. He aims to implement free city buses, rent freezes, and city-run grocery stores if elected. The 34-year-old assembly member has previously caused a stir by defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary, an outcome that shocked many political observers.

Cuomo, however, is actively seeking to gain support from moderate voters and has criticized Mamdani’s record. He has been vocal about public safety, positioning himself against alleged anti-Semitism, which he claims is part of Mamdani’s platform. The former governor’s campaign has also faced scrutiny due to past controversies surrounding his resignation over sexual harassment allegations.

Sliwa remains steadfast as the only Republican candidate in the race, emphasizing public safety and community-oriented policies. Despite pressure from some factions to withdraw in favor of Cuomo, he has vowed to continue his candidacy.

As the election draws nearer, tensions among candidates are rising. In a recent interview, Cuomo’s comments regarding Mamdani’s potential response to terrorist attacks drew sharp criticism from the Democratic candidate, who called the remarks “disgusting” and racially charged. Mamdani argues for comprehensive community safety strategies separate from traditional police methods, a point met with mixed reactions from his opponents.

With early voting underway and major decisions looming, New Yorkers’ participation in this election is crucial. For those planning to vote early, it’s essential to confirm polling locations, as they may differ from those on Election Day. Voters can look up poll sites by entering their addresses on the New York City Board of Elections website.
