New York Dmv Scam Warning

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting residents about a new scam where fraudsters pose as DMV representatives to steal personal information. This scam involves text messages urging individuals to act quickly to avoid penalties, prompting concern among state officials.

“DMV will not send you texts asking for your personal information,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. The department emphasizes the importance of being cautious about information shared via online messages.

The State Department of Information Technology Services adds that individuals should be wary of unfamiliar links sent through texts or emails, even if they appear to come from trusted organizations. Residents are advised to refrain from providing personal information through these messages.

Previous scams have included claims that E-ZPass accounts were on the verge of suspension. The New York DMV urges people to remain vigilant against these fraudulent attempts designed to commit identity theft or infect devices with malicious software.

<p“The scammers flood phones with these texts, hoping to trick unsuspecting New Yorkers into handing over their personal information,” said Schroeder. The DMV offers resources on its website for those seeking information on how to protect themselves from scams.

In related news, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office also issued warnings about similar scams in the Hudson Valley, highlighting the need for public awareness regarding potential phishing attacks disguised as official communications from the DMV.
