U.S. News Ranks Lindenhurst Among New York’s Top 10 Places to Live

WASHINGTON, June 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — U.S. News & World Report has named Lindenhurst one of the top 10 places to live in New York state, a recognition that surprised local officials and delighted residents. The announcement comes as part of the expanded 2025-2026 Best Places to Live list.
Mayor Michael Lavorata shared his astonishment at the news during a recent meeting of the New York State Mayors Association. ‘I was flabbergasted. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was,’ he said.
Over the past decade, Lindenhurst has recovered from economic challenges and now features a revitalized downtown, a new transit-oriented apartment complex, upgraded parks, and an active schedule of community events. Mayor Lavorata credited state and federal funding for infrastructure improvements, including road repairs on Wellwood Avenue, as key to the village’s transformation.
‘This recognition is a tribute to the hard work of so many in our community,’ Lavorata added.
John Lisi, a civic leader and resident for 53 years, expressed pride in Lindenhurst’s recognition. ‘It’s nice to hear that we made that list. Lindenhurst has always been a small-town community—a sort of ‘Mayberry’—but it’s managed to hold on to its original character,’ he said. He noted that new restaurants and park improvements contributed positively to the village’s appeal.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer also praised the village’s achievements, stating, ‘Lindenhurst deserves these accolades. The revitalization, restaurants, and downtown life have made it an even better place to live than it was.’
Lindenhurst ranked No. 10 in New York state, with Massapequa Park Village taking the top spot. U.S. News evaluated more than 850 cities to compile its list of the top 250 nationwide, with the criteria including quality of life, education, health care access, crime rates, and economic indicators.
Erika Giovanetti, a consumer lending analyst at U.S. News, noted that the expansion of the rankings allows for more detailed insights into living conditions at the community level. ‘It enables them to consider more options for potential places to settle down,’ she remarked.
