Landslides Devastate Wayanad, Kerala: Rescue Operations Underway

Wayanad, a picturesque district in Kerala, is facing a serious crisis after massive landslides struck the area. Sadly, at least 36 people have reportedly lost their lives due to these landslides.

Among the villages deeply affected are Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. In these hamlets, known for their scenic beauty, the destruction is heartbreaking, with destroyed homes, blocked roads, and uprooted trees scattered everywhere.

Rescue workers are working tirelessly, battling heavy rains to assist those in need. They’ve been seen moving the injured to ambulances while navigating through mud and debris. To help coordinate the response, a 24-hour control room has been established for the public to provide information.

The situation has drawn attention from high officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with ₹50,000 for the injured.

The landslides have also cut off transport routes, making rescue operations even more challenging. Yet, state officials, like Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, are determined to organize airlifts for affected families.

The ongoing rain has posed additional hurdles for rescue efforts, with the Indian Meteorological Department issuing warnings about continued heavy rainfall in the northern hilly areas of Kerala. They’ve even placed Wayanad and nearby Kannur on a ‘red’ alert.

As rescue teams continue their work, the local community has been urged to stay indoors and heed safety warnings. Meanwhile, former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed his sorrow over the situation and is in touch with officials to ensure help reaches those in distress.
