NFL Hall of Famer Defends Shedeur Sanders Amid Browns’ QB Controversy

CLEVELAND, Ohio – An NFL Hall of Famer has criticized the Cleveland Browns‘ management of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The comments came after the Browns selected Sanders as the 144th overall pick in the recent NFL Draft, ending a surprising slide down the draft board.
Once seen as a potential first-round talent, Sanders was picked up by Cleveland amidst their ongoing quarterback troubles. General Manager Andrew Berry described the move as a “low-risk, high-upside” acquisition, highlighting that Sanders’ selection might allow him to exceed expectations. “We felt like it got to a point where he was probably mispriced relative to the draft,” Berry said.
Currently, Sanders is the third-string quarterback behind veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel. As the Browns struggle to find their rhythm on offense, the scrutiny over their quarterback management has intensified. Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson did not hold back, labeling head coach Kevin Stefanski‘s handling of Sanders as disrespectful. “I wish they would have cut him. Let him have an opportunity to go to a better football team,” Dickerson said.
Despite the controversy surrounding his selection, Sanders has approached the situation with composure. “Whenever I get on the scout team, that’s my game day. Everyone knows. I look at it as I have six games a week, so I’m happy about that,” he noted, remaining focused during practice.
The Browns’ offense has struggled this season, and there are calls for a quarterback change as they seek to improve their performance. Fans increasingly want to see Gabriel take the field instead of Flacco, who has been underwhelming in the first two games of the season. However, Stefanski remains confident in Flacco’s experience and has not indicated any plans for a switch.
As the team deals with mounting pressure following an 0-2 start, the future of the Browns’ quarterback situation hangs in the balance. With challenging games ahead against tough opponents, the question remains: Will Sanders get his shot this season, or will Flacco continue to lead the charge?
