2015 2017 Ford F 150 Transmission Issues

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal investigators have launched a preliminary evaluation into approximately 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks from the 2015 to 2017 model years due to concerns regarding sudden transmission downshifting while driving at highway speeds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration‘s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is examining reports that indicate unexpected, unrequested downshifting to lower gears without driver input. This could potentially lead to rapid vehicle deceleration, increasing the risk of crashes. The NHTSA reported receiving 138 consumer complaints related to this issue.

According to the NHTSA announcement, “This unrequested transmission downshift would cause unexpected rapid vehicle deceleration.” Several complaints also note that during the downshift, the vehicle’s rear wheels may lock, seize, or skid, further jeopardizing vehicle control.

A Ford spokesperson stated, “We are working with NHTSA to support its investigation,” emphasizing that the inquiry currently focuses on vehicles equipped with six-speed transmissions. The spokesperson did not mention whether the investigation could lead to a recall.

Last year, the NHTSA recalled approximately 668,000 2014 model-year F-150 trucks for similar problems, and Ford has previously conducted recalls for 2011-2012 models over transmission downshifting issues.

In light of the recent complaints, one owner from Ohio relayed a particularly alarming incident in which their 2016 F-150 unexpectedly shifted from sixth gear to first gear while traveling at 70 mph, leading to a near-miss of being thrown forward in the vehicle.

As the NHTSA continues its preliminary evaluation, it will assess the extent of the potential safety risks before deciding if an engineering analysis is warranted or if a recall will be mandated. So far, there have been no reports of crashes or fires linked to these incidents.

With the 50th anniversary of the F-150 approaching in 2025, the evaluation’s findings may have significant implications for Ford’s reputation and consumer confidence in their popular model.
