Niagara Region Braces for Multi-Day Lake Effect Snow Squall Event
The Niagara Region is preparing for a prolonged period of heavy snowfall as a multi-day lake effect snow squall event is predicted to hit the area. The alert, issued by Environment Canada, warns residents of Niagara Falls, Welland, and the Southern and Northern Niagara Regions of Ontario to expect significant snow accumulation.
The heavy snowfall is expected to total between 15 and 25 cm by Monday evening, with snowfall rates reaching 3 to 5 cm per hour at its peak. Visibility will also be greatly reduced at times due to heavy snow and blowing snow. The snow squalls are anticipated to continue through at least Monday, with temporary breaks in the intensity due to shifting winds.
Lake effect snow squalls are known for their unpredictable nature, with weather conditions changing rapidly over short distances. Clear skies can quickly transform into heavy snowfall within just a few kilometers. This poses challenges for travel, as visibility may suddenly drop to near zero in heavy snow and blowing snow. As a result, travel throughout the Niagara Region may become difficult.
Residents are advised to monitor updates and alerts from Environment Canada and to exercise caution on the roads. To report severe weather conditions, individuals can send an email to the provided address or submit reports via Twitter using the hashtag #ONStorm.
