Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa has initiated an immediate inquiry into allegations concerning the wrongful detention of a Naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, who has reportedly been held in captivity for six years. This order comes amid increased public scrutiny following the circulation of a video online highlighting the alleged injustice.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) responded to the situation in a statement, emphasizing the Nigerian Armed Forces’ dedication to justice, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law. The statement, signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, assures the public that their military judicial processes are designed to maintain fairness and justice in line with military laws and procedures.

General Christopher Gwabin Musa has promised the investigation’s findings will be shared with the public when available. Meanwhile, citizens are encouraged to avoid disseminating unverified information to prevent misinformation.

The DHQ reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is committed to a prompt and transparent examination of the case, reinforcing that Seaman Abbas Haruna’s detention will be thoroughly reviewed.

In a related move, Minister of State for Defence Bello Muhammad Matawalle has also called for an investigation into the issue following an appeal from Mrs. Hussaina Haruna, Seaman Haruna’s wife. Matawalle, through his Personal Assistant on Media Ahmad Dan-Wudil, reaffirmed that the armed forces are founded on integrity and fairness. He stated that no military personnel should face undue suffering or wrongful treatment.

Matawalle assured that the case would be addressed with absolute seriousness, involving the Nigerian Navy and all necessary authorities to ascertain the details surrounding the alleged detention. He stressed that Seaman Haruna’s rights will be protected, and any protocol violations will be dealt with expeditiously.

The minister further asked the public and relevant stakeholders to remain calm while the investigation proceeds, ensuring all actions align with legal standards.
