Nikole Hannah-Jones Discusses Legacy of Slavery at Springfield Event

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois—Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones will speak about Juneteenth and the legacy of slavery in America on May 17 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
The event will feature Hannah-Jones’ insights into racial justice and the ongoing struggle for equity. It aims to address common myths surrounding American freedom and its implications today.
According to the organizers, doors open at 6:00 p.m., and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but attendees must register in advance.
This event is a collaboration among Springfield’s annual Juneteenth Celebration, the University of Illinois-Springfield Center for Lincoln Studies, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
Hannah-Jones is renowned for her investigative work on racial inequality. Her accolades include the MacArthur Fellowship, the Peabody Award, and multiple George Polk Awards. Most recently, she won an Emmy Award in 2024 for her role as a host and executive producer of the Hulu docuseries, The 1619 Project.
