North Carolina, Virginia Schools Close Due to Winter Weather
School systems across North Carolina and Virginia announced closures and remote learning days for Friday, January 10, 2025, as a winter storm approaches the region. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, impacting counties including Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Davidson, Randolph, and Montgomery.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Lexington City Schools, and Thomasville City Schools are among the districts closing entirely. Others, such as Guilford County Schools and Rockingham County Schools, will shift to remote learning. In Virginia, Danville City Schools will close at 1 p.m., while Pittsylvania County Schools will dismiss students at 12:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service predicts heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions, prompting school officials to prioritize safety. “We are closely monitoring the weather and will provide updates as needed,” said a spokesperson for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
In addition to school closures, the winter weather has raised concerns about power outages and travel disruptions. Local authorities are urging residents to prepare for icy conditions and limit non-essential travel.
Meanwhile, a separate cybersecurity incident involving Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has added to the challenges. Officials confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed PowerSchool, the district’s student information system, compromising data for students, families, and staff. Federal law enforcement and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction are investigating the breach.
Residents are advised to stay tuned to local news outlets and school district websites for updates on weather-related closures and cybersecurity developments.
