Winter Storm Texas School Closures

Several school districts in North Texas announced closures for Thursday, Jan. 9, due to an impending winter storm expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, and ice. Prosper ISD, Callisburg ISD, Lindsay ISD, Gainesville ISD, Sacred Heart School, Muenster ISD, and Era ISD will all be closed, while Collinsville ISD will operate on a two-hour delay.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for portions of North Texas, effective from 6 a.m. Thursday to noon Friday. Forecasters predict 1 to 4 inches of snow and sleet, along with ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch. The hazardous conditions are expected to impact travel, particularly during morning and evening commutes.

Prosper ISD stated that its maintenance staff is preparing facilities for extreme weather and will monitor conditions closely. Updates will be communicated via email, text messages, social media, and the district’s website. Other districts, including Callisburg and Gainesville, cited safety concerns as the primary reason for closures.

Residents are advised to avoid travel if possible and to prepare for sudden changes in visibility and road conditions. The Texas Department of Transportation recommends keeping emergency supplies, such as flashlights, food, and water, in vehicles and ensuring cars are winterized.

This marks the first significant winter weather event of the season for North Texas, prompting widespread precautions. School officials emphasized the importance of safety and urged families to stay informed about further updates.
