Northeast Winter Storm Blankets Cities with Unexpected Snowfall
The recent winter storm has come to an end in cities like Philadelphia, New York City, and Hartford, with snowfall totals exceeding expectations. The Nor’easter system has moved off the coast rapidly, leaving behind significant snow accumulations in various regions.
Areas such as Allentown and Scranton in eastern Pennsylvania experienced higher-than-anticipated snowfall, with amounts ranging from 10 to 15 inches. In New Jersey, snowfall totals reached 6 to 10 inches. Parts of the Hudson Valley, north of New York City, observed snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches.
New York City recorded its highest snow amount in Central Park since January 2022, with a total of 3.2 inches. While the major cities saw significant snowfall, some slushy and untreated areas may freeze as temperatures drop below freezing across the Northeast.
Snowfall totals in various Northeastern areas included 15.2 inches in West Hartford, Connecticut; 15 inches in Sussex, New Jersey; 14.5 inches in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania; and 13.8 inches in Newtown, Connecticut, among others.
Reports indicate over 160 weather-related accidents in Connecticut, resulting in eight injuries. The Pennsylvania State Police Department responded to over 1,200 weather-related crashes and incidents, with details on injuries or casualties yet to be confirmed.
With more than 440 car accidents in New Jersey, the State Police also assisted over 440 motorists with various aids. In Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old man tragically lost his life in a snowmobile crash in Newberry Township.
While the storm’s impact continues, New York City officials have issued a special weather statement warning of below-freezing temperatures tonight. The city's Public Schools system faced technical difficulties during a remote learning session, impacting students and parents.
The storm has affected travel plans, with airlines offering waivers and contingency plans to manage flight disruptions. Delivery services like UPS and USPS are ensuring safety in delivering Valentine's Day gifts amid the weather challenges.
