June 6 Not Declared a National Holiday in India

NEW DELHI, India — Reports circulating on social media claiming that June 6, 2025, has been declared a national holiday in India are false. The Government of India did not announce any public holiday for that date.
Multiple online posts suggested that the central government declared June 6 a public holiday, possibly to allow citizens to celebrate Eid al-Adha, which falls on June 7 this year. Such claims have created confusion among the public, especially regarding the closure of banks and educational institutions.
However, the Reserve Bank of India‘s official holidays calendar clearly states that while some banks in cities like Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi will close for Eid, there is no nationwide holiday on June 6.
Posts on social media claimed that the holiday would lead to closures across central government offices and various Indian states. One tweet from a user stated, “Ind_Govt has officially announced a Public Holiday this coming Friday, leading to nationwide closures, from Edu_Institutes to Fin_Sctors!”
Despite the rumors, the Government clarified that institutions will remain operational. The misinformation prompted many users to turn to AI chatbots like Grok to verify the claims.
According to experts, no provisions have been made for a national holiday. Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on June 7, and that is when banks and some institutions will close, but it does not extend to June 6.
The government issued reminders to citizens to check credible sources and avoid spreading unverified information to curb the confusion.
