School Nurses Appreciation Event

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — May 7, 2025, marks School Nurses Day, a time to recognize the vital role of school nurses in the health and academic success of students. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has proclaimed this week as Nurses Week, celebrating the dedication and service of nurses across the state.

Governor Dunleavy stated, “Nurses are essential in maintaining a high quality of life and provide support in various environments including schools, where they act as critical health leaders.” He emphasized that school nurses play a significant role during times of crisis, offering comfort and care when students need it most.

In Aldine Independent School District, special events are planned to honor school nurses. Dr. Angela Singletary, the district’s health services director, remarked, “Nurse Appreciation Week allows us to recognize the expertise and compassion of our nurses who work with students every day.” The theme for this year, “School Nurses: Here for Every Student,” focuses on the invaluable support provided by school healthcare professionals.

School nurses manage a variety of health concerns, from chronic conditions to urgent care. They also form close relationships with students, often being the first to notice signs of chronic illnesses or emotional difficulties.

For instance, school nurse Jones-Williams shared her passion for nursing, saying, “What began as a need for flexible hours turned into a deep commitment to community health and student wellness.” She highlighted the importance of health education and proactive care, from teaching students with diabetes to organizing wellness programs.

Veteran school nurse Laurie Fitzmorris, with 26 years at Jones Elementary School, expressed her love for supporting students during critical moments. “It’s about the relationships we build, seeing students grow and succeed, and being part of their lives outside of the classroom,” she said.

On May 7, a celebration luncheon will take place at the Donaldson Child Nutrition Center for Aldine ISD’s school nurses, featuring lunch, recognition programs, and relaxation activities.

As the community honors school nurses, families are encouraged to express gratitude on social media using hashtags like #SchoolNurseDay and #AldineImpact, showcasing their appreciation for these vital healthcare workers.
