Lagos Building Collapse Lasema

A recent building collapse in Orile Iganmu, Lagos, has highlighted a critical issue of non-compliance with safety directives. According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the occupants of the two-storey building that collapsed had ignored a quit notice served to them due to the building’s distressed condition.

LASEMA officials stated that despite the eviction notices, some occupants refused to vacate the premises, which ultimately led to the tragic incident. The agency emphasized that all occupants were eventually evacuated from the building for safety reasons before the collapse occurred.

The incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations in Lagos. The Lagos State government has reiterated that its environment laws are designed to protect residents rather than punish them, but compliance with these laws is crucial to prevent such tragedies.

The emergency response team from LASEMA and the Lagos Response Unit (LRU) were swift in their response to the incident, ensuring that no lives were lost during the evacuation process.
