Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo is a Nigerian military and political leader who served as President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He was the first military ruler to hand over power to a democratically elected government, and he was also the first elected president to serve two terms.


Obasanjo was born on March 5, 1937, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. He is the eldest of nine children born to Amos Adigun Obasanjo and Ashabi Obasanjo. Obasanjo’s father was a farmer and his mother was a trader.

Obasanjo had his primary education at Saint David Ebenezer School, Ibogun, Ogun State, Nigeria. He then proceeded to Baptist Boys’ High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

In 1958, Obasanjo joined the Nigerian Army. He attended the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, England, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Camberley, England. He also attended the Staff College Camberley in Camberley, England, and the National Defence College in Abuja, Nigeria.


Obasanjo joined the Nigerian Army in 1958 and rose through the ranks to become a general. He served in the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. After the war, he was appointed the Federal Commissioner for Works and Housing.

In 1976, Obasanjo was appointed the Head of State of Nigeria. He ruled the country until 1979, when he handed over power to a democratically elected government.

In 1999, Obasanjo was elected President of Nigeria. He was re-elected in 2003. During his presidency, Obasanjo oversaw a period of economic growth and development in Nigeria. He also played a key role in promoting peace and stability in Africa.
