OneTaste Leaders Convicted of Sexual Abuse and Coercion in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, New York – Two leaders of OneTaste, a wellness start-up that promoted sexual empowerment through controversial practices, were convicted on Monday of using psychological abuse and coercion against their employees. Nicole Daedone, the founder, and Rachel Cherwitz, the former head of sales, were found guilty by a jury after a five-week trial in federal court.
Prosecutors described how victims worked long hours in humiliating conditions, performing degrading sex acts and manual labor for little or no pay, fearing they would lose their community and support if they failed to comply. Witnesses testified that they were coerced into becoming ‘handlers’ for Daedone’s boyfriend, investor Reese Jones, which involved living with him and performing various submissive tasks.
The defense claimed that no physical force was applied and argued that their practices were protected under the First Amendment as a form of spiritual teaching. “We are deeply disappointed in today’s verdict,” said defense lawyers Jennifer Bonjean, Ceila Cohen, and Michael Robotti. They expressed their belief in their clients’ innocence and indicated plans for an appeal.
Each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison following their convictions on charges of conspiracy to commit forced labor. Sentencing is scheduled for late September. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. stated that the verdict revealed the defendants as individuals who exploited vulnerable individuals under the guise of empowerment.
FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia noted that the verdict sends a strong message against such manipulative tactics in the workplace. Daedone, who founded OneTaste in 2004, argued outside the courthouse that her intentions revolved around spiritual liberation, particularly for women.
During its peak, OneTaste attracted significant attention, even featuring in a viral TED Talk by Daedone. However, it faced scrutiny through several investigations and documentaries that portrayed it as exploiting its members. Reports indicated that the start-up utilized its teachings to control and manipulate its workforce.
Witnesses for the prosecution described a cult-like atmosphere within OneTaste, where employees were expected to engage in intimate acts with clients. The company allegedly preyed on individuals with past trauma, using psychological tactics to maintain control. The historical positive public image of the company transitioned to one marked by serious allegations of sexual exploitation.
Multiple testimonies highlighted manipulation tactics employed by Daedone and Cherwitz, including threats of termination for those who resisted their demands. This trial has been a turning point in addressing the culture of coercion within the wellness industry.
