Orlando Pirates Vs Jwaneng Galaxy

Orlando Pirates secured an impressive 2-0 victory against Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of the CAF Champions League‘s second preliminary round. The match took place on September 14, 2024, at Botswana National Stadium. The South African team, often referred to as the ‘Sea Robbers,’ came into the fixture as favorites but remained cautious, aware of last season’s defeat by the same team at the same stage.

The Pirates’ coach, Jose Riveiro, offered Deano Van Rooyen his official debut at right-back, with young striker Boitumelo Radiopane starting on the bench. Monnapule Saleng was active along the flanks in the first half, but Jwaneng Galaxy’s defense held strong initially. The first real chance for the home team came at the 30-minute mark, with Omaatla Kebatho’s close-range header missing the target.

The Pirates took the lead just before halftime when Tshegofatso Mabasa struck a goal, putting the guests ahead. In the second half, Jwaneng Galaxy increased their efforts to equalize, yet Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine made an essential save from Baruti to maintain the lead.

Boitumelo Radiopane made his debut appearance late in the game, substituting Mabasa. Nkosinathi Sibisi also came off the bench, replacing Relebohile Mofokeng. Orlando Pirates secured their position further with 13 minutes left when Deon Hotto completed a successful counter-attack, sealing the match with a second goal.

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday as they face Chippa United in the Betway Premiership. The team lined up as follows: Chaine, Van Rooyen, Ndah, Sesane, Hotto, Makhaula, Mbatha, Saleng, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng, and Mabasa. Substitutes included Buthelezi, Sibisi, Gilberto, Dlamini, Maela, Kimvuidi, Rasebotja, Moleleki, Radiopane.
