Overnight Closures of A12 Announced Due to Weather Delays
National Highways has announced urgent overnight closures of the A12 northbound, as adverse weather conditions have delayed construction work. As reported, the closures are necessary to complete essential roadworks before the final reopening of the roadway.
The affected stretch of the A12 will be closed until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, covering the area from junction 23 at Kelvedon to junction 26 at Stanway. Traffic will be diverted from junction 19 via the A131, A120, and B1408, according to the authorities.
To complete “final road resurfacing and finishing work,” the A12 northbound lane from junction 25 at Marks Tey to junction 26 at Stanway will also be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. These operations will include the removal of cones and other temporary traffic barriers, as well as the application of road markings and the installation of road studs, commonly known as cats’ eyes.
A spokesperson for National Highways attributed the delays to inclement weather, stating, “Unfortunately, the wet weather has meant that we haven’t been able to do some of our final work. So we still have a bit more work to do on the northbound stretch this week, including removing the roadwork barriers, applying white lines and inserting road studs or cats’ eyes.”
Meanwhile, the southbound lanes of the A12 have already reopened, with all three lanes now allowing traffic to travel at the national speed limit. National Highways aims to complete the main construction work this week and is conducting final quality checks in the subsequent weeks.
The planned diversions during the closures will guide vehicles to exit at the junction 25 northbound slip road at Marks Tey, with a signed route along B1408 through London Road to Stanway, and then re-entering the A12 at the junction 26 northbound entry slip road.
