Panama Customs Union Meeting

Panama City, Panama — On Monday, October 13, Panama commenced the Second Round of the Central American Customs Union as part of its Pro Tempore Presidency within the integration process. Delegates from Central American countries convened to participate in the discussions around harmonizing customs laws for the region.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the National Customs Authority (ANA) and included representatives from member countries and officials from the entity. Reynaldo Bello, the Deputy Logistics Director of Customs, welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “It is vital to continue with the integrationist spirit to move forward and give our best in this endeavor.”

During this round, delegates are expected to review proposals submitted by the private sector, facilitated through the Economic Advisory Committee. The aim is to strengthen the legal and operational framework of regional trade, which is essential for economic competitiveness.

The Central American Uniform Customs Code (CAUCA) serves as a legal instrument that outlines basic customs legislation for member states of the Central American Integration System (SICA). This initiative seeks to ease the functioning of the Central American Common Market while promoting enhanced regional economic competitiveness.

The event saw both in-person and virtual participation, signifying a strong commitment from all parties involved to enhance trade and economic development in the region. With Panama leading this round, officials are hopeful that significant progress will be made towards establishing a modern, efficient customs regulatory framework.
