Paraguayan Swimmer Luana Alonso Removed from Olympic Village
In a surprising turn of events, Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has been asked to leave the Olympic athletes’ village in Paris due to what her team described as ‘inappropriate behavior.’ This news comes as the Games are entering their final week of competition.
Alonso, who is just 20 years old, finished sixth in the 100m butterfly race, falling short of a spot in the semi-finals. Just days later, she announced her retirement from swimming in an emotional post on social media, where she has a huge following of nearly 500,000 fans.
The team made it clear that they could not allow Alonso to stay in the village until the Olympics wrapped up on August 11. Larissa Schaerer, head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, stated that Alonso’s presence was creating an ‘inappropriate atmosphere’ within the team, although details about her specific actions have not been disclosed.
After the announcement of her retirement, Alonso shared heartfelt gratitude for her swimming career through her social media channels. She reflected on the experiences and friendships she garnered along the way, revealing that her decision to retire was made a long time ago.
Shortly after her removal from the village, it appears Alonso has returned to the United States, where she attends Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She even shared a video on social media, suggesting she was driving towards a border control crossing.
Alonso’s Olympic journey began at a young age and she made her debut in the Tokyo Games four years ago. Many are left to wonder about her future plans, as she mentioned ambitions to one day run for Minister of Sport in Paraguay.
