Caleb Murphy New England Patriots Linebacker

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots have filled an open spot on their 53-man roster by claiming linebacker Caleb Murphy off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers. This move was confirmed on October 20, 2025, following Murphy’s release from the Chargers.

Murphy, 25, becomes the third team he has joined in three years. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023 after splitting his college career between Grand Valley State and Ferris State. Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 254 pounds, Murphy began his professional career with the Tennessee Titans, where he played under head coach Mike Vrabel.

In his rookie season, Murphy appeared in three games, primarily contributing on special teams. After being released by the Titans midway through his second season, he joined the Chargers, where he played in 14 games over two seasons. Most recently, Murphy participated in all six games for the Chargers this season, totaling five tackles and half a sack.

With his new role, Murphy joins an outside linebacker group with Harold Landry and K’Lavon Chaisson. The Patriots are looking to enhance their defensive capabilities ahead of their Week 8 game against the Cleveland Browns at Gillette Stadium on October 22. The Patriots currently sit at 5-2 this season.

Murphy’s collegiate achievements include setting the NCAA single-season record with 25.5 sacks during his senior year at Ferris State and receiving multiple awards for his defensive skills.
